”Most books on this subject are either very technical or very general. This book takes the middle ground of general background with specific discussion of prompt engineering. The first few chapters are a general overview, which can be gained from the Internet.. but the discussion is well structured and up to date (as of September 2023). A general knowledge of terminology in AI and chatbots is useful in reading this. The main focus of the book is on prompt engineering, which is justified as a main interaction between humans and AI. The book covers foundations, design of prompts and maximising the effectiveness of prompt engineering. I found the most useful part of the book being the list of 100 specific prompts at the end of the book. The reader can put these into a chatbot, to see what results and can see the difference between repeated inputs. Other activities could include using a different chatbot and using a chatbot from another culture, say Chinese. Specific results could then be analysed in terms of the general issues raised in the earlier part of the book. In this way, the book can be used to stimulate self study and to gain insight into specific interactions with AI.
